car driving license classes

Class B

  • Minimum age: 18 years
  • For motor vehicles, except vehicles of classes A1, A2, A
  • up to 3500 kg permissible total mass (GVM), designed and built to carry no more than 8 persons
  • Domestic only: Three-wheeled motor vehicles
  • Basic training, 5 hours cross-country, 4 hours motorway, 3 hours lighting drive (45 minutes each)
  • Class AM and L included
  • Carrying trailers with a Class B driving license: All trailers up to 750 kg GVW
  • For trailers with a GVW of more than 750 kg, the GVW of the combination is limited to 3500 kg

class BF17

  • Minimum age 17 years
  • Accompanying driving with accompanying persons

Class BE

  • Vehicle combinations consisting of a towing vehicle of class B in combination with a trailer or semi-trailer with a trailer GVW of more than 750 kg and not more than 3500 kg
  • Basic training, 3 hours cross-country, 1 hour motorway, 1 hour lighting drive (45 minutes each)

Class B96

  • Class B vehicle with trailer
  • Maximum permissible weight of the trailer of more than 750kg
  • Vehicle combination over 3500 kg, but max. 4250 kg
  • Is granted by assigning the key number 96
  • no exam, but special training required

Class B197

  • Here you can combine your training on vehicles with manual and automatic transmissions
  • The practical test can then take place on a car with automatic transmission.

Motorcycle license classes – from mopeds to motorcycles

Class A1

  • Minimum age 16 years
  • light motorcycle, one or two-seater
  • More than 50 cm3 displacement, but not more than 125 cm3
  • Not more than 11 KW
  • Class AM included

Class A2

  • Minimum age 18 years
  • Upgrade from A1 to A2 possible
  • Class AM and A1 included
  • up to 35 kW

Class A

  • Minimum age 24 years
  • 20 years after at least two years of previous ownership of class A2
  • 21 years for three-wheeled motor vehicles of class A
  • AM and A1 and A2 included

Class B196

  • Minimum age 25 years
  • key number 196
  • Permission to drive light motorcycles up to 125 cm3 displacement and an engine power of max. 11 KW
  • Previous ownership Class B (at least 5 years)
  • valid only in Germany

Class AM

  • Minimum age 15 years
  • moped up to 50 cm3 displacement
  • Maximum speed not more than 45 km / h

class moped

  • Minimum age 15 years
  • test certificate
  • maximum speed 25 km / h

class L

  • Minimum age 16 years

a) Tractors designed for use in agriculture or forestry and used for such purposes, with a maximum speed of 40 km/h. However, when towing a trailer, they may only be driven at a maximum speed of 25 km/h.


b) Self-propelled work machines, self-propelled feed mixers, forklifts and other industrial trucks with a maximum speed of 25 km / h, including trailers.
